IN VITRO FERTILISATION (IVF)
What is In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF)
In-vitro fertilisation is commonly referred to as IVF or “test tube baby”. IVF (in vitro fertilization) is a fertility treatment technique that mimics the process of human fertilization in a laboratory.
IVF involves removing eggs from the woman’s body, fertilizing them in the laboratory with her partner’s sperm, and transferring the resulting embryos back into her uterus between 2 to 6 days later. The procedure involves these main steps:
-
Stimulation of the woman’s ovary with hormone injections to produce more eggs.
-
Removing the eggs from the woman’s body (egg collection procedure).
-
Obtaining the partner’s semen(sperm).
-
Fertilization of the eggs in the laboratory.
-
Placing the embryos into the uterus (embryo transfer procedure).
-
Using further medications to strengthen the uterus (womb) until the day of the pregnancy test (2 weeks after the embryo transfer procedure).
What is INTRA-CYTOPLASMIC SPERM INJECTION (ICSI)
Just as IVF changed the destiny of women with damaged tubes, ICSI (Intracytoplasmic sperm injection) is another fertility treatment which has revolutionised the treatment of male infertility. Without it, millions of men with poor or weak sperm would never be able to father babies. With male infertility increasing worldwide, more and more couples are having to resort to ICSI treatment to have children. No matter how weak, few or poor the sperm, ICSI will generally work.
Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI treatment) involves injection of single sperm in to an egg in order to cause fertilization. The steps involved are the same as for IVF except that in the laboratory, a single sperm is picked up with a fine needle and injected into the egg.
This is done for all the good quality eggs. ICSI is mainly useful for infertility due to poor quality sperm. In this situation, the couple is unable to have a baby because the sperm cannot enter and fertilise an egg, and ICSI is often the only hope. Pregnancy rates are similar to IVF.
